Cabinet of Wonders opens the digital door to

Cabinet of Wonders has a wonderful plan to expand its audience by forging a partnership with the digital news and culture website Salon, which boasts 17.6 million unique visitors each month.

With this new deal, the variety show hosted by Wesley Stace will generate podcasts on every week, beginning with a segment featuring Janeane Garofalo, The Milk Carton Kids, and Josh Rouse.

Derived from the words “broadcast” and “iPod”, podcasts use digital media to generate an episodic series, typically a music or talk-show such as Cabinet of Wonders, that is viewed on the Internet.

“Salon is proud to partner with Cabinet of Wonders on this podcast,” notes Salon Editor-in-Chief Dave Daley. “Since 2009, Wesley Stace has curated the best variety show in America, featuring hundreds of pioneering musicians, writers and comedians. We think that the format and talent will be well received by our devoted readers and are honored to swing open the Cabinet doors to a wide audience and archive this amazing artistic genius.”

Fred Armisen, Aaron Neville, Edie Brickell, Rosanne Cash, and Josh Ritter are among the many guests who have appeared on Cabinet of Wonders. Andrew Van Wyngarden, Robert Pinsky, and Southside Johnny are slated as guests for the May 28 podcast; The Dove and the Wolf will guest on June 4; and Eugene Mirman, Robbie Fulks, and The Assembled Company will guest on June 11.

Receiving revenues wholly from advertisers and private investors, Salon provides daily content without charging its readers. However, the digital magazine also features a premium subscription option which offers 20% of new content exclusively to subscribers.

Since closing its online chat board in 2011, Salon has moved on with other sources of content, notably Mondoweiss in 2012 and now Cabinet of Wonders this year.
